Review: Vikings

Vikings is directed by Michael Hirst, the creator and director of shows like Camelot The Tudors, The Borgias, and it is produced by the History Channel. The series follows the adventures of Ragnar Lodbrok, one of the most famous Scandinavian heroes. Ragnar is famous for his bloody raids on the coasts of France and England. He is a born leader who, for a short period of time, gets to be the King of all Viking tribes.
There were some voices that say that the series does not portray the historical truth exactly, but to be honest, it's a drama and doesnt claim otherwise. If it would describe the historical truth in detail, then it would be more of a documentary than an adventure series. So, of course a number of adjustments were made in order to create a viable commercial product, but many aspects reproduce the atmosphere of the ninth century. The main character and his wife are very nice, and the captain, played by Gabriel Byrne is a relentless, cruel Viking, just like the Vikings usually were.
The action is truly exciting. The characters, even the least historically significant ones, are well organized and are able to develop in an interesting way; we'll see how and if they are also properly sketched in the following episodes. Do not expect the blood bath of Rome and Spartacus or even the soft core from those series, because History has a different demographic target than HBO and Starz.

Verdict:
I invite you to watch the Viking series; it's interesting and light, just right for a boring evening. Action fans and history buffs will also find this one entertaining.
